“I was once lost in an unknown forest. But the trees seemed to know me!”
My Name is Oweneema Monica, growing up as an orphan left me with a steady source of motivation that drives me to do my best. I receive whatever challenges life throws at me and turn them into an opportunity or inspiration. In my last job, this passion led me to challenge myself daily and learn new skills and tools that helped me to found the Lifesavers Community. As the CEO, I took on personal online research projects about mental health challenges and solutions. I wanted to support young people during their transition from childhood to adulthood , I was only 19 years at a time and standing for a very unpopular and mystified cause. ( In the Uganda of 2016, Mental health was a topic that turned heads and prompted scared glares, and suicide was a crime according to the law.) No many people could dare to explore these two topics without the fear of being misunderstood and the cumbersome folds myths around these topics was enough to scare anyone off. And I still stood. Because I believed. “When I is replaced with WE, even illness becomes wellness!” Lifesavers Community reached out to 5 schools and impacted over 1500 students in Mpigi, Uganda. From this one experience, I learn what it really means to stand for the causes that are most pressing in my community. One December morning, as I walked through the dewy hilly meadows of Isingiro, a district in the western region of Uganda. I was struck by how bare the hills were, with scarse trees and a few shrubs thrown here and there. And when I turned on the Eastern side, I would just make out a blackened slope, not even the crimson sun rays could hide the angry sight of a burnt forests upon that steep hill. And in that moment I felt a calling to do something. I wanted to know what caused people to burn hills and how I could stop it. Now here I am, the CEO of Folk Wood Forestry, labour to protect the land and empower the grassroots community.

Do you want to hear the story of our Founder? In this story we share with you the events that awakened the Forestry Love Story behind Folk Wood Forestry. Ladies and Gentlemen, I present to you Fred’s Story.
Frederic Mutabazi grew up with his grandmother. She owned a small plot of land in Goma town, Democratic Republic of Congo. Grandma Veneranda loved trees and plants. And every raining season she enjoyed planting trees and other plants in a space of about 10×20 meters in front of their house. Grandma Veneranda grew a variety of trees, she didn’t care that the trees were not many or the field small, she just believed that, trees made some little change, which made life better.
*Benefits*
1. From time to time, the family enjoyed an abundance of fruits and saved on firewood costs by pruning Woody branches off the trees, and found it easier to pay for Fred’s school fees.
2. THE SHADY SHOP.
The shades of the trees attracted people to the house front yard. which inspired Grandma Veneranda to open a small retail shop. Her clients were the people around who loved to rest in the shades of the trees as they commuted from home to schools, offices, markets and back. The people who rested under the trees often ended up buying from the small shop that Grandma Veneranda ran, which improved the family’s standards of living.
TRACING THE FOOOTPRINTS OF HIS ANCENSTORS.
Years later, When Fred fell in love with Monica, the time to form his own family had come. Fred found that he was still fascinated by the worth/ value of one single tree. This one thought made him throw to the air all the fears that surrounded his financial situation at the time. When the meek lady said “I Do!” Fred moved in with Monica, the love of her life. With an air of determination and confidence. After all, he had Grandma Veneranda’s footsteps to follow. Would you like to learn more and keep in touch?
